City Information

Hassan acts as the base destination for tourists visiting places like Belur and Halebid. Belur boasts of being one of three major Hoysala sites. While at Belur do check out the Channekeshava Temple that took around hundred years in the making. You may even hire a guide to know the sculptures in the temples in details. The Chennigaraya and the Viranarayana temples are the other Hoysala temples at Belur worth visiting.

Halebid is at a distance of 33 kms from Hassan. Halebid is renowned for its landmark Hoyasaleswara temple. The architecture of the Hoyasaleswara temple with the endless variety of Hindu deities, sages, stylized animals, birds will sweep you off your feet. Do check out the garden and the museum close to the temple. The Kedareswara temple and three Jain temples are the other places of interest in Hassan. Then there is the Jain pilgrimage center of Shravanbelgola 48 km from Hassan. At Shravanbelgola do check out the statue of Lord Bahubali (Gomateshwar).

You may participate in the Mahamastakabhisheka of the statue of Bahubali at Shravanbelgola that takes every 12 years. It is is an occasion to remember. The statue is anointed with thousands of pots of coconut oil, yogurt, ghee, bananas, jaggery, dates, almonds, poppy seeds, milk, saffron and sandalwood during the Mahamastakabhisheka. Next Mahamastakabhisheka will be held in the year 2005.
