Kerala is a narrow sliver of land that adheres to the Arabian Sea and carries the burden of being India’s Role Model State. This tiny coastal state is a phenomenon in more ways than one.
Apart from all the other obvious reasons the beaches of Kerala attracts a number of tourists for it’s own uniqueness. Starting from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram the State is in choc-a-bloc with beaches and places that attract tourists and travelers from all over. Beach resorts of Kerala in the same vein compliments the exotic nature of Kerala beaches.
The most important and well-known centre in the north and along the coast is Kozhikode or Calicut. The north Kerala ambience is defined more by places like Kozhikode. The district is still a vital link in the State’s spice and coconut trade. Just a few kilometres away from Calicut, is Kappad, which is where Vasco Da Gama first landed.
Talking about beaches of Kerala, it is a must to mention about the Ernakulam beaches. Ernakulam district is a cluster of islands networked by lagoons and backwaters. Kochi, located in the district of Ernakulam is one of the finest natural harbours in the world and also known, as the queen of the Arabian Sea. Located 71 km to the north of the state Capital Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam is one of the oldest ports on the Malabar Coast. Apart from these, the renowned beach resort Kovalam has been a favourite haunt for tourists. Among all the above-mentioned beaches Varkala is a quiet and out-of-the-way stretch of golden sand. Also known as the Papanasam beach, it is a popular spot for the mineral springs and rocky cliffs here.
Besides these major beaches of Kerala, there are a few more beaches that are not so explored or crowded. These will definitely provide the much-needed isolation one seeks during an offbeat travel. Some of these beaches include the Kannur, Dharmadam, Kollam, Thangasseri and the Shanghumukham.
