City Information

Located in the Indian state of Karnataka, Mysore was the former capital of this region. A city of palaces, people and smells, the princely city of Mysore is worth a visit whatever the month or season. Mysore is a dream city that never lets down the visitors with its clean, light and easygoing environment. Even with the growth of the city in response to modernization, Mysore has acquired only a mild change of pace.

Once in the city, the visitors cannot remain aloof from the charm that the city weaves on them. There are enough options in the city that can engage the visitors for quite a long time. One can go for sightseeing in and around the city. There are enough beautiful walks through which one can explore the city and its culture. Shopping for perfumes and fruits is a good option at this place. Other options include excursion to the places in the vicinity of Mysore, boating in the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam, and a visit to the fantasy park.

Dussehra (September/October) in Mysore is a sight to remember even after leaving the place. It is believed that the presiding deity of the city has the power to conquer evil forces and this has led the citizens to celebrate the festival with much gaiety and fervour. The tradition of celebrating Dussehra with such grandeur started with the 16th-century rulers of Vijayanagar. After the disintegration of the Vijayanagar Empire, the tradition was kept alive by the rulers of Mysore and continues till now. Between the months of September and November, for ten days, the Dussehra festival is celebrated and the city is at its colourful best with music, dance, sports, literary competitions, fairs and exhibitions all over. All this culminates in the Dussehra procession and a torchlight parade on the tenth day.
