City Information
Bhuj is the capital and a major town of the Kachchh district in the northwest of Gujarat. The Kachchh region is a vast low-lying, barren marsh area with saline soil. Only areas above this saline level support vegetation, thus making it similar to Jaisalmer in Rajasthan. Bhuj is an old walled city with maze of streets and alleys, old palaces, museums, etc. The oldest museum of Gujarat is also here. Major attractions are Prag Mahal, Aina Mahal, Sarad Bagh Palace, Kachchh Museum, etc.
Aina Mahal was constructed by Maharao Lakhpati and was built in traditional Kachchh style. The interiors of this palace are breathtaking with so much lavishness concentrated in just a few rooms. It has now been turned into a museum. There are portraits, paintings, statues, silk embroideries, royal wardrobes, weapons, etc, all belonging to the erstwhile rulers. Hall of pleasure and pleasure pool are also worth visiting.
