Jamnagar is fondly called as the 'Jewel of Kathiawad'. It was a princely state of considerable importance and is rich in relics from the time of the Jadeja Rajput kings locally known as the Jam Sahibs.
Adjacent to the Kutch region in northwestern Gujarat, Jamnagar is a very calm and quiet destination and a must visit for those who seek solitude in a vacation.
For birdwatchers, the best site in Jamnagar city is the Lakota Lake also called the Ranmal Lake where up to 75 species of birds have been known to descend in winters. Ducks, pelicans and storkes are abundant here. On an island on the lake is Lakota Castle.
Jamnagar was once famous for its pearl fishery that was established in the 16th century AD. It was also one of the biggest pearl fishing centres in the world till recently. About 300 km away from Ahmedabad, Jamnagar is known for the exclusively designed bandhani fabric printing, silverware and embroidery. Betel-nut-crackers of Jamnagar are very popular all over the country.
In its recent history, Jamnagar became successful in adding it's name in the Guinness Book of World Records for the continuous chanting of the 'Ram Dhun' (the name of Lord Ram) since August 1, 1964. Jamnagar has the only Ayurvedic University in India, which makes the place a significant centre for traditional medicine.
Jamnagar finds mention in the world of sports too. Famous Indian cricketers Ranjit Singh and Duleep Singh shared it as their hometown. The domestic Indian trophies namely Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy have been dedicated to these two players.
Jamnagar is the centre point of a circuit comprising places in the state of Gujarat like Dwarka, Jamnagar, Pirotam Island, and Rajkot.
