Besides being The Gateway to Kerala’s Backwaters Kollam is an integral part of the Thiruvananthapuram-Kollam-Alleppey-Kottayam-Thekkady-Madurai tourist circuit. Along with the backwater cruises Kollam offers the perfect amalgamation of culture, adventure and nature. While at Kollam you must visit the Picnic Village. The Picnic village comprises of the historic Government Guesthouse, a yatri niwas (tourist lodge), an adventure park and a children’s traffic park. At a boating distance from the Picnic Village is the Ashtamudi Lake. The beauty of this lake and its palm-fringed banks attract several tourists. Besides a boat ride you may even stay in a luxurious houseboat at the Ashtamudi Lake, which forms a part of the world-renowned backwater, cruises of Kerala. Do check out the sunset cruises at the Ashtamudi Lake. While at Kollam you must shop for the local handicrafts and cashew nuts. The annual Ashtamudi Crafts and Art festival takes place in December/January every year at Kollam. You may visit this Kollam and enjoy the exhibits of arts and crafts from all over India
