Hotel in Matheran - The Byke Hotel
Take a welcome break from your busy schedule and come to a heaven called Matheran. It's an easy escape, as Matheran, the nearest Hill-Station to Mumbai is only 100 km away and is easily accessible by road or by rail. It conjures images of a world apart - dotted by innumerable visions of scenic splendor, unencumbered by the maddening crowds of the city, unpolluted by industry or power driven vehicles. A not-to-be missed adventure is a ride up to the top of the hill station in the world's smallest gauge commercial train - one of the last mini trains in the world. At the height of 803 meters above sea level, Matheran offers you a salubrious climate and fascinating landscapes through thickets and woods.
The Byke is Matheran's first dwelling place. Built in 1854 by the discoverer of Matheran, Hugh Malet, then Collector of Thane, it is a heritage building that still stands majestically in all its pristine glory, personifying a heritage unparalleled, surrounded by the inheritance of 7 sprawling acres. In this wooded estate the first luxury hotel of Matheran, The Byke- A Hotel Retreat, has been blended with nature.

City Information
Matheran is an undulating hilltop cloaked in shady trees that sprawls languidly at an altitude of 800 m. The journey involves an adventurous two-hour ascent in a toy train, with food and drink vendors and monkeys jumping on and off as the valley glides by sedately. Alternatively, a tough 11 km hike through thick and shady forests or a winding car drive can get you there just as well.
Matheran's cliffs, with incredibly steep drops to the plains below, create stunning viewing points. These panoramic vistas, by day or by night, leave you feeling light headed. On a clear night you can even see the lights of Mumbai from Hart Point. In fact, all of Matheran is a series of such quixotically named points that are popular if isolated site for picnics and fireside revelry at night. Charlotte Lake, the Panther's Caves and Paymaster Park are other attractions, especially for children.
The main bazaar offers a variety of items such as cane and leather articles, hats, chappals and the sinfully sweet speciality -- Chikki. Vehicles of any kind are not permitted in the town, which makes it a very quiet and serene place.
