A wild life sanctuary situated 54 km from Junagadh in Gujarat, Sasan Gir, provides refuge to the rare and majestic the Asiatic Lion. The sanctuary established in 1884 is the only remaining natural habitat of the Asiatic lion. Spread over an area of 500 square miles of dry, open scrubland, Sasan Gir is home to Asiatic lions, bear, antelope, hyena, fox, the black buck, chinkara, chousigngha and other species of the deer family. There are over 200 bird species including the peafowl, grey partridge, Bonelli's eagle, crested serpent eagle, jungle bush quail, painted sand grouse, common green pigeon and several species of dove. Sasan Gir is also home to the marsh crocodile, which can be sighted easily in the rivers flowing through the sanctuary as wells as in the lake formed by the Kamaleshwar dam.
